Receiving an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, this Disney Pixar short film is about a young sandpiper bird who must overcome her fear of water in order to find food to survive. Seemingly devoid of hard-hitting messages that you’d expect short films to provide, this film serves as a fun family fantasy that can be enjoyed by everyone. They must return the creatures to their own world, from which they were released. Erax, 2022Īrguably one of the best short films that can be found in the streaming world and is suitable for kids, Erax tells the story of a young girl and her aunt, who accidentally release a slew of mythical monsters and creatures into their world. It has been described as one of the best live action short films and you can find it on YouTube. Written by and starring Rachel Shenton, this emotional and hard-hitting film depicts the lack of support in place for deaf children. She is taught sign language by a social worker, who is an advocate for it to be taught in schools in order to help deaf children receive the support they need. As a result, she is inadvertently alienated by them. This 20-minute Oscar-winning short film depicts a young girl who is deaf and struggles to be understood by her family. I’m thinking perhaps short film may be a better format for the horror genre: with the limited amount of time, the film has to come to the point quickly, and that point hits home much harder. You have to check out the other short films submitted to the current state of (feature length) horror, the short films are refreshing. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of this director’s work. Particularly when Lotta’s underneath the sheets and her bed lamp’s light shines through the lighter spots in her sheets it creates a powerful atmosphere. The lighting – which is obviously important in this film – is done very, very well. ![]() It’s almost as if you’re right there beside her. The shots are brilliantly composed: the intimate ones you share with Lotta underneath the sheets, as well as the ones on the hallway, when she turns the lights on and off. Even if the quality of the sound could have been better, the talent of the people involved in this film is obvious. However, it did win the award for Best Director. Lights Out was submitted to the Bloody Cuts Horror Challenge, but didn’t win any of the big prizes. It’s almost as if her speeding heartbeat is palpable! I love Lotta Losten‘s performance – her reactions are so relatable, and she conveyed her fear brilliantly. That ending! Tell me that didn’t just totally freak you out. This fabulous less-than-three-minutes-long horror short film was directed by David Sandberg and features Lotta Losten. ![]() Who hasn’t felt “something” was there, when they were home alone? This short suggests your fears may not be entirely unfounded… I showed him Francis, which reminded him of Lights Out, so he showed me.
